The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, Department of Practice, Sciences and Health Outcomes Research (P-SHOR) has an exciting opening for a Business Services Specialist to work with our administrative offices.

The Business Services Specialist uses established principles and best practices of business administration to coordinate the management of assignments within the department. Responsibilities include entry-level professional work in a combination of administrative/business operations such as finance, procurement, facilities, and other areas involving oversight of business management services.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Prepares procurement transactions, travel expenses and monthly audits/reconciliations using established purchasing processes. Responsibilities may include establishing effective communication channels and acting as a liaison between the department and officials within and outside the institution.

  • Evaluates the payment of invoices. Resolves discrepancies with vendors or service providers while communicating with our Business Services Administrative Team.
  • Participates in space planning activities. Plans, schedules, and assigns activities and conference calendars. May assist in coordinating the renovation or relocation of department administrative and research areas.
  • Assists in the preparation, planning, research, and distribution of department communications for faculty and staff including information technology guidelines (e.g. WebEx, and Smartboard functionality). Assists in ongoing projects including but not limited to setup and maintenance of equipment and inventory, instruments, facilities, parking voucher system, and service contracts.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of office operations, recommends, and implements changes.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Six years progressively responsible experience in a combination of budgeting, accounting, payroll, purchasing, and personnel work.
OTHER: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Working knowledge of and ability to apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Working knowledge of management principles and practices. Skill in applying basic analytical skills to review expenditures and revenues, prepare forecasts, and reconcile accounts. Skill in performing basic mathematical computations. Skill in planning work and supervising others. Skill in organizing and executing multiple assignments under specific time constraints. Ability to understand and interpret University policies and procedures in the areas of finance, human resources, payroll, purchasing, and sponsored programs. Ability to prepare and present budgetary, accounting, and other reports and schedules. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to operate office equipment, computers, and related software. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact.

Based on the duties of this position, selected candidates are eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit (Union).
Salary Range: $50,732 - $59,000
