Clinical Dietitian

Schedule: Hybrid position (2-3 days on site, 2 days remote)
Responsible for delivery of Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to MGH Weight Center patients. Provides direct patient care to pediatric and adult patients through performing the nutrition evaluation and leading nutrition groups and individual programs. Performs activities in the setting of a multidisciplinary care team. Creates health education materials and participates in program development and responsible for precepting Dietetic Interns during Weight Center rotations/practicum. Collects outcome data for nutrition related programs using Red Cap data collection system and keeps IRB approvals current as needed.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reviews medical records of referred patients;
Performs initial nutrition evaluation of patients as defined in the Weight Center (WC) nutrition protocol;
Documents initial and follow up nutrition evaluation using the Weight Center Nutrition Evaluation structured template;
Assesses patient’s readiness for weight loss program and motivation;
Assesses patient’s current nutritional status, nutrition-related biochemical parameters, eating patterns;
Assesses patient’s lifestyle and structured activity;
Assesses patient’s ability to participate in WC programs;
Reports to WC team outcome of nutritional assessment and makes recommendations for intervention;
Provides coverage as needed for WC nutrition group education programs at the Weight Center: including Healthy Habits for Life, Medically Intensive Nutrition Therapy Program, Surgical Management Program and Pre-Surgical Management Program;
Provides nutrition education / monitoring via eNutrition program;
Provides MNT to adult and pediatric pre/post weight loss surgery and medical management patients;
Provides instruction and supervision of dietetic interns and other professionals in training at the Weight Center; sends interns/students all pre-rotation forms required for MGH badge, and observation of surgery;
Creates and revises nutrition educational content related to patient handouts/manual, Dietitian’s Dish newsletter and other related content’
Attends all WC provider and team meetings;
Provides patients with interpretation of indirect calorimetry test of RMR and appropriate meal plan for weight loss;
Supports and participates in the interdisciplinary process of research protocol review, implementation, and outcome evaluation;
Provides quality, specialized nutrition care/services based on the approved research protocol, patient needs, and professional/unit standards;
Reviews, implements, evaluates, and revises the nutrition component of research protocols in collaboration with investigators and research team consistent with the goals of the research protocol, general nutrition principles, needs of the individual participants, and governing policies and procedures. The nutrition component may require literature review, contribution to study design, and development of education materials, data collection tools, and research meals;
Collects and documents research protocol outcomes as decided by research team for clinical outcomes projects, including MGH Weight Center Healthy Habits for Life Program, Medically Intensive Nutrition Therapy Program, eNutrition and other programs; data collection and documentation should be done on a timely basis.
Performs clinic hours at 50 Staniford Street, Boston, and other sites depending on future need.
QUALIFCATIONS:
Minimum Requirements:
- Registered Dietitian and Licensed in the state of MA (LDN) and at least 2-year experience specializing in Obesity Nutrition; counseling and leading groups. Must be an excellent public speaker.
- Applicants with a Master’s Degree in Science, Public Health or related field preferred.
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
- Individual must demonstrate an understanding of the special needs of the pediatric and adult patient with obesity;
- Must demonstrate strong skills in leading clinical groups and display excellent interpersonal skills;
- Ability to develop collegial relationships with other healthcare providers;
- Must be willing to travel to other satellite locations a few times a month and work 1-2 evenings a week;
- Must be willing to stay current with the obesity literature;
- Demonstrate good skills in translating scientific information into lay education materials and presentations;
- Must be able to apply principles of adult learning when leading adult weight groups and providing individual care;
- Must be able to apply knowledge in an age appropriate manner for both adults and pediatrics;
- Must demonstrate knowledge and ability to provide cognitive-behavioral therapy;
- Must collect, analyze and interpret outcomes data for quality improvement of Weight Center programs.
