Position Highlights:
The Financial Counselor I will assist the outpatient population with onboarding to programs offered by the medical center and outside agencies. They will provide the patient information and direction on the completion of the on-line application process for Financial Assistance. The Financial Counselor I will provide excellent customer service to both our patient population and internal as well as external clients. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Position Responsibilities:
Identify/counsel potential and repeat/recurring bad debt patients to prevent the rendering of non-urgent care services. Offer payment options to patients based upon policy and procedure.
Provides pricing estimates related to the No Surprises Act as well, patient shopping and self-pay bundle packaging and communicates pre-service patient liability based on expected charges and potential coverage. Collects necessary payment needed for patient to receive services.
Reviews prior account notes for past due balances and any information that might aid in the application/payment process, as well as documents all encounters and actions. Informs patients/guarantors of their liabilities and collects appropriate patient liabilities, including co-payments, co-insurances, deductibles, deposits and outstanding balances at the point of contact. Utilizes available tools to calculate patient liabilities.
Provides benefits eligibility estimates and communicates pre-service patient liability based on expected charges and potential coverage.
Assists patients in understanding Explanation of Benefits provided by their insurance company and developing a strategy for payment of outstanding balances for which the patient is responsible for. Collects and properly records demographic and insurance information required to properly address the customers' financial issues. Verifies patient's eligibility from resources provided by third party payers and portals and other on lines services.
Maintains WQs related to HRSA funding, COVID, Coverage Discovery, Coverage Discovery, ABN's Radiology Estimates and other WQs developed on an as need basis.
Reviews the financial status of patients in WQs scheduled for services to determine which customers would benefit from financial counseling and make arrangement with Clinic Coordinators to assist patients with meeting with a Financial Counselor either prior to or immediately after their upcoming appointment date. Consults patients on use of budget/payment plans in use including assisting in the application for the Financial Assistance Program.
Receives and properly responds to, or directs telephone and electronic inquiries from patients, payers, physicians and their staff, internal department and other persons and entities.
Ability to exercise good customer service skills when communicating with both our patients as well as our internal customers. Able to find resolution within the phone interaction satisfactory to the caller and/or having the knowledge when to escalate to their supervisor.
Interacts and collaborates with numerous departments to resolve issues while also analyzing necessary information that will ensure hospital reimbursement.
Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Rush University Medical Center's Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior. Guards to assure that HIPAA confidential medical information is protected.
Attends regular EPIC training sessions or other sessions conducted for the benefit of associates involved in the Financial Counseling functions.

Required Job Qualifications:

High school graduate or equivalent.
0-2 years of experience
Must have a basic understanding of the core Microsoft suite offerings (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
Excellent communication and outstanding customer service and listing skills.
Basic keyboarding skills
Critical thinking, sound judgment and strong problem-solving skills essential
Team oriented, open minded, flexible, and willing to learn
Strong attention to detail and accuracy required

Preferred Job Qualification:
Associates Degree in Accounting or Business Administration
Experience within a hospital or clinic environment, a health insurance company, managed care organization or other health care financial service setting
Working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy and physiology is preferable.
