Forensic Toxicology Lab Technician
Medical Examiner’s Office
Hourly Range: $21.82 - $24.92
Job Summary: The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office is charged with investigating and determining the cause and manner in each case of sudden, unexpected, or unusual death. The goal of the Toxicology Unit is to provide high quality timely analysis to assist the Medical Examiner’s Office in determination of cause and manner of death. Under the direction of the Forensic Technical Director, the Forensic Toxicology Lab Technician will assist in the daily functioning of the laboratory by communicating simple problem resolution, providing customer service, specimen accessioning, specimen preparation and set-up of toxicological analysis.
Job Responsibilities:
- Specimen Accessioning & Disposing. Accessioning biological and chemical evidence using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Transferring specimens to storage.
- Pre-analytical Sample Preparation. Assist the laboratory staff in preparation and set-up of needed samples and reagents necessary for extractions.
- Inventory and Supplies. Assist laboratory staff in maintaining proper inventory of supplies and assisting with equipment maintenance.
- ABFT Accreditation. Become and remain familiar with American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT) and ISO/IEC 17025 standards of accreditation.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- A current resident of Wisconsin
- Current Wisconsin Driver's License maintained throughout employment.
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Natural Science, Applied Science, Technology, or in a closely related field
- At least one (1) year of related work experience in a forensic toxicology laboratory
- Intermediate knowledge and experience in use of Microsoft Office Software, specifically Word and Excel.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50lbs on a regular basis.
- Ability to work in an environment with loud noises and offensive smells over 75% of work time.
- Note: Position requires a criminal background check; felony and some misdemeanor convictions would be a barrier to employment.
