The Calhoun School, a leading progressive, independent, co-educational day school in Manhattan, seeks a full time Middle School Social Studies Teacher to begin in as soon as possible.

Social Studies teachers are responsible for the development, implementation, and progression of the Calhoun curriculum, and the success of its students. Social Studies department faculty are highly collaborative, and they use current scholarship and inquiry-based approaches to challenge their students. We inspire students to problem-solve and strive to provide a positive learning environment in which all students can excel.

The Middle School Social Studies teacher will report to Director of Middle School.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION

• 
  Preparation of lesson plans and teaching of core Middle School Social Studies.

• Collaborating with divisional leaders and colleagues in the Social Studies department to organize and lead curriculum-supported travel seminars as well as other co-curricular and extracurricular activities.

• Creating a positive learning environment for students and inspiring students to hold themselves to a high standard of academics and character.

• Maintaining anecdotal and assessment records to inform thoughtful, comprehensive narrative reports while assessing students in a rigorous and progressive manner.

• Incorporating technology into the practice to support student learning.

• Providing differentiated and small group instruction based on the learning modalities of students.

• Cultivating a love of Social Studies through interactive, joyful learning.

• Serving as an advisor to a small group of students.

COLLABORATION/COMMUNICATION

• 
  Collaborating with colleagues both intra- and cross-departmentally to share best practices and ensure student progress.

• Attending faculty meetings and conferences as needed.

• Maintaining consistent relationships with families, including phone calls, emails and conferences.

• Engaging in the wider life of the Middle School - for example, serving as a faculty advisor to a student club, coaching a sport or chaperoning a trip.

• Displaying a strong commitment to, belief in, and alignment with Calhoun’s mission and values.

• Maintaining a high level of professionalism.

REQUIRED SKILLS

• 
  Experience in designing and evaluating curriculum for Social Studies instruction

• Interest in working in a progressive and humanistic school with a focus on experiential and place based teaching and learning.

• Appreciation for, and commitment to, diversity and social justice in multiple forms.

• Demonstration of enthusiasm and interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents and the community.

• Flexibility and ability to cope with change.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 
  Bachelor’s degree in related field required, Master’s degree in related field preferred.

• Middle school teaching experience, preferably in social studies or a related subject.
