The Network Administrator is responsible to manage, monitor, maintain and enhance the USS corporate enterprise data network, including LAN, wireless, data center and various complementary technologies employed in a heavy-industry environment. The Network Administrator provides technology expertise and process leadership in the application of new and existing technologies in order to deliver comprehensive solutions to USS customers, with a focus on steel making and related plant operations areas.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible to all aspects of the health and stability of the USS data network at the Gary Works, Midwest Works, and other support locations in the Chicagoland area
  • Support for data network incident and event management including investigation, troubleshooting, reporting, resolution, root cause analysis and corrective action management including on-call and off-hours support
  • Designs network solutions using approved, standard technology in cooperation with peers, vendors and partners
  • Manages Data Networking support of key customer projects and contributes to projects across the entire organization
  • Investigates new technology and innovative solutions including identification, testing and business case development
  • Monitors data networks for performance, security and stability – takes action to identify trends and proactively address issues
  • Contributes to core business processes including business plan development, expense tracking, project planning & development, demand plan management, inventory tracking, standards compliance, audit coordination, and disaster recovery/business continuity planning

Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree preferred, or equivalent Enterprise IT support experience
  • Cisco / Network certification (CCNA or greater) preferred
  • Demonstrated experience supporting data networking technologies in an enterprise environment, including:
    • LAN switching and routing in a Cisco enterprise network environment
    • Wireless LAN support including RF fundamentals, design & configuration, security management, troubleshooting and monitoring
  • Ability to work safely in a dynamic, heavy-industry environment
  • Results-oriented member of technical support teams; the successful candidate is a self-starter, able to manage complex incidents, proactively identify opportunities for improvement and develop innovative solutions
  • Excellent time management skills including ability to multi-task and effectively prioritize work
  • Excellent work ethic; willing to extend the extra effort and time required to meet critical deadlines
  • Strong oral and written communications skills; able to articulate ideas and listen effectively; professionally communicates with all customers, vendors and technical support staff, including remote customers and team members in foreign countries
  • Strong analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Accomplished Analyst able to manage complex technical problems through identification, design, solution definition and implementation
  • Demonstrated experience managing vendor relationships, including incident management, project coordination, relationship development and SLA maintenance
  • On call support required, including participation in team on call (24/7) rotation; candidate must be willing to work flexible hours as demanded by outage / on-call activities and international team needs

Preferred Skills:

  • OT / Process Automation networking and related technologies
  • Advance IP routing experience, including BGP protocol proficiency
  • Data center network support including Cisco Nexus platform
  • WAN architecture, troubleshooting and support including MPLS VPN technology and vendor management, incident management and performance monitoring
  • Internet routing and security
  • IP Telephony in a Cisco environment including Call Manager, Unity and related platforms
  • Advanced Network Security technology and solutions (Firewall, Network Admission Control)
  • Experience with the following technology or solutions is a plus:
    • Server administration including Virtualization technology (VMWare/other)
    • Enterprise storage solutions including SAN / FCoIP / iSCSI and related technology
    • Virtual desktop solutions
