The XCP-4 (Continuum Models and Numerical Methods) is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Associate focused on the development, implementation, and analysis of solid dynamics models within a hydrodynamic code for high-speed, compressible, multi-material flows. XCP-4 is responsible for the design and implementation of a wide variety of physical models including high explosive, turbulence, and solid dynamics models, and is a leader in the development of numerical methods for hydrodynamics simulations, remap and code linking algorithms, and more.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Solid Mechanics Modeling

Professional knowledge and experience with solid mechanics theory and experience with methods for the simulation of the mechanical behavior of materials.

Programming

Demonstrated proficiency in a programming language such as Fortran, C/C++, and/or Python.

Scientific Communication and Collaboration

Demonstrated ability to publish research in peer-reviewed journals or conference proceedings, communicate research to an interdisciplinary audience and work on an interdisciplinary team.

Inquisitiveness

We are looking for someone with a strong sense of curiosity and motivation to learn and apply new technical concepts in novel ways.

Education/Experience: A Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, materials science or engineering, or a related field. The candidate must be within 5 years of completion of Ph.D. or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment.

Clearance

Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance, which typically requires US Citizenship.

Desired Qualifications:

Solid DynamicsComprehensive knowledge of shock physics or experience in modeling solid dynamics, either at the continuum level or with mesoscale mechanics.

Mechanical Behavior of Metals

Experience studying or working with theories on the mechanical behavior of metals such as yield surfaces,

methods of hardening and crystal plasticity.

Simulation Methods

Experience with Lagrangian methods on general unstructured meshes. It would be beneficial if beyond that you also had experience with Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) methods.

Programming

Knowledge of code development using parallel processing tools such as MPI or CUDA for supercomputing applications.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Q Clearance: Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
