Where the Chemistry Happens

As a chemicals supplier to almost all industries, BASF will establish a standalone subsidiary dedicated to its Mobile Emissions Catalysts, Precious Metals Trading, Recycling, and related Products and Services business. The new group is referred to as BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions and is wholly owned by BASF. BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions will operate globally in over 15 countries and comprise of approximately 20 production sites and over 4,000 employees.

Our R&D team is searching for a Research Chemist or Reach Engineer to work at our Iselin, NJ site where our R&D and Application Engineering (RD&A) organization develops cutting edge catalyst technologies for environmental applications. As an Emerging Technologies catalysts RD&A team member, you will be responsible for the development, optimization, and application of current or future catalyst systems for creating Clean Air, such as cleaning the air supply to aircraft cabins or removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or improving indoor air quality. You will be using a variety of analytic and testing tools such as laboratory characterization apparatus, synthetic bench equipment, or reactors for the evaluation of catalyst performance. There is also a strong collaboration with catalyst process development teams for the transfer of technology from research lab to commercial production.

As a Research Chemist/Engineer you create chemistry by…

  • Working to design experiments, review and analyze testing data, generate reports and present data to external customers or internal stakeholders.
  • Working closely with catalyst design scientists, application engineers, testing engineers, process engineers and prototype sample lab personnel. You are expected to interact with sales and marketing functions and external customers.
  • Being responsible for catalyst component or system performance demonstration on a reactor, often following customer defined testing procedures or at times using newly developed protocols.
  • Ordering and tracking catalyst samples, designing and defining testing plans, coordinating catalyst aging and testing, critically reviewing and analyzing testing data, generating external or internal reports, and presenting to a technical audience, including external customers.
  • Supporting and partner with customer facing application engineer(s) on various technical topics and programs. Most common ones are real-world or competitive sample analysis, reactor testing and engine testing of specific catalyst component or system.
  • Being responsible for catalyst formulation research and development as well as research technicians who conduct various activities in the lab, contributing to catalyst performance improvement through characterization and understanding of catalyst technologies.
  • Qualifications – NOTE: Not all positions are eligible for cross-regional relocation/work authorization. Cross regional is defined as movement between countries (e.g. Canada to U.S.).

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Your formula for success…

    BS plus 5-years relevant industry experience, MS plus 3-years relevant industry experience; or Ph.D. without industrial experience, with Major in chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field. Background or knowledge in heterogenous catalysis. Preferred experience in data analysis of chemically reactive flow, esp. with gaseous flow systems (reactor or engine testing). Strong communication (including written and presentation) skillsets.
