Job Summary:


The incumbent will be part of a vibrant research effort focused on revealing how immune tolerance is maintained in health and lost when autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis develop. As a member of a collegial team, the incumbent will lead a research project in collaboration with Dr. Miram Shelef, as well as assist with lab management, human subject recruitment and sample processing, providing guidance for undergraduates, onboarding new staff on laboratory policies and experimental techniques, manuscript preparation, and ensuring a rewarding laboratory environment for all. The incumbent will present their research findings in lab meetings and will have the opportunity to present their work at national conferences. This position is ideal for the candidate who wishes to be an integral part of an academic research team aiming to improve human health and offers significant opportunity for long-term career advancement. The laboratory is located in the William S Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital with clinical research space in the UW Medical Foundation Centennial Building.

Responsibilities:

Identifies research problems, designs research methodologies, performs research, and helps to prepare the results for presentation to professional organizations or for scholarly publications to help advance research.
  • 10% Assists with the identification of research problems and the development of research methodologies and procedures
  • 50% Collects and analyzes research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision and limited responsibility
  • 5% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
  • 5% Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
  • 5% Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
  • 15% Serves as a main point of contact and liaison with internal and external stakeholders providing information and representing the interests of a specialized research area
  • 10% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area.

Education:


Required
PhD in Biological Sciences or a closely related field is required.


Qualifications:


At least 6 years of lab experience is required.

Expertise in immunology and some of the following methodology is preferred: ELISA, flow cytometry, cell culture, western blotting, immunofluorescence, molecular biology techniques, big data analysis, human subjects research, and/or murine experiments.

Full or Part Time: 40% - 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

The starting salary for the position is $75,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Additional Information:


This vacancy is being announced simultaneously with Position Vacancy 277961 (Research Specialist) & 277962(Researcher I); please note that only two vacancies exists.

This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and every four years.

Effective January 1, 2020, the U.S. Department of Labor Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be updated to require that positions earning less than $35,568 annually be considered non-exempt under FLSA provisions for overtime (see https://www.dol.gov/whd/overtime2019/). Based on these rules, if the person selected for this recruitment will earn less than the new salary threshold at January 1, 2020 ($35,568 annually), he/she will be an academic staff non-exempt employee, will be paid hourly, and will receive overtime compensation for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek.
