JOB DESCRIPTION

Smiths Medical, now part of ICU Medical, is currently hiring a Senior R&D Mechanical Engineer in Southington, CT.

Our R&D team is seeking a highly motivated Senior Mechanical and Product Development Engineer who is passionate about delivering creative solutions for high-volume, consumable medical devices.

In this role you’ll have opportunity to create impactful solutions for the medical field in which you will collaborate with Product Design Engineers, R&D Testing Labs, Marketing, Design Assurance, as well as internal and external Manufacturing teams.

You will perform as the lead development engineer for medical device components and products of varying complexity. The primary focus of this role will be leading the development on larger scale new product introduction projects in which they will be responsible for both technical oversight as well as project management. On smaller scale projects they will act as a mentor to Junior Engineers to provide guidance on technical issues, cross functional collaboration, and project management. This role has a need for strong material science and plastic injection molding background. Familiarity with Solidworks or comparable CAD software is a plus.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform as the lead development engineer for medical device components and products of varying complexity.
• Lead the development of larger scale new product introduction projects
• Be responsible for both technical oversight as well as project management.
• Act as a mentor to Junior Engineers to provide guidance on technical issues, cross functional collaboration, and project management.
• Conducts engineering activities of advanced scope or degree of difficulty.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to product problems.
• Prepare documentation associated with engineering activities.
• Determine resolution of advanced/complex technical issues as needed and assures that technical work meets specified requirements.
• Performs additional duties as assigned by manager.
• This position is required to assure compliance of Company operations to all applicable laws, regulations and standards, good business practices and company documented procedures (including knowledge of all standards, government occupational health and environmental regulations and statutes related to the site) Performs additional duties as assigned by manager.
• Engage others, promote, and participate in Environmental, Health, and Safety initiatives, focusing on continuous improvement.

THE INDIVIDUAL

• Minimum BS in engineering: biomedical, materials, mechanical, etc.
• 5-8 years of product development experience required.
• You'll need strong material science and plastic injection molded component design background
• Familiarity with Solidworks or comparable CAD software
• Leadership and project management experience a plus
• Education requirements can be obtained through an educational institution or gained through equivalent work experience.
