Job Summary
The Preservice Trainer is responsible for facilitation of preservice training of foster, adoptive and kinship parents in the region served. The trainer will usually work with a co-trainer to provide families with parenting information and a general knowledge of Michigan’s Foster Care System.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Facilitation of monthly preservice trainings of assigned region.
  • Collecting attendance throughout training sessions.
  • Ensuring participation by engaging attendees with personal stories and activities.
  • Timely processing of training referrals; including trainee feedback for referring workers.
  • Communicating with assigned co-trainer prior to training to ensure smooth processes.
  • Sharing of supportive resources to current and prospective foster families.
  • Maintaining knowledge of Foster Care Licensure process and communicating to clients.
  • Documenting all contacts, referrals, and other information that is needed for reporting purposes.
  • Maintaining contract compliance.
  • Actively participates in required meetings and trainings.
  • Set up and tear down of training venues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a worker within the Child Welfare System.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the child welfare policies and procedures preferred.
  • Computer literate.
  • Ability to effectively speak to small or large groups as well as to individuals.
  • Ability to relate to current and prospective adoptive, foster and kinship families.
  • Ability to relate to local DHHS and private agency personnel.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to effectively train prospective foster families.
  • Ability to travel/work throughout the region as necessary.
  • Ability to provide culturally competent services that shows sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
Education, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services.
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s License, appropriate insurance and use of own vehicle.

  • Works in an office environment and in the community as needed.
  • Possible stressful environment working with relative caregivers, foster and adoptive families.
  • Non-traditional hours occur often due to the need for evening and weekend
  • foster parent trainings and home visits that should accommodate the foster families’ schedules.
