QUALIFICATIONS: Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) with a minimum score of 5, AND Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment written test passing score; OR Educational Interpreter Standards Recommendations page 12 National Interpreting Certificate (NIC) with RID certification AND Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment written K-12 settings test passing score. Successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities, or have otherwise demonstrated a commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population. Knowledge of Deaf Culture and education techniques. High School Diploma or equivalent

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Support students in acquiring sign language vocabulary, following oral/signed directions, and participating in all school related Interpreting/communicating the classroom instruction and materials for students, helping students understand lessons and communicate to staff and students
  • Assist hearing impaired students in Includes using fluent signing to interpret the lesson as taught by the classroom teacher, helping the student ask questions of the teacher
  • Assist hearing impaired students in interaction and communication with hearing students and staff
  • Interpret for hearing impaired students participating in extra-curricular events parent-teacher conferences
  • Work collaboratively by assisting teachers in assessment, curriculum implementation, student interactions, enforcing safe behaviors, and enhancing social growth of student in the classroom
  • Interpret behavioral directions and physically assist when necessary; may provide hand-over-hand support as determined by IEP team
  • Communicate with students, parents, and community members with respect and confidentiality and consistent with the direction and guidance of staff, administrators, and school/district policies and procedures
  • Prepare, preview and study subject matter being taught or presented, for the purpose of ensuring a clear interpretation is provided
  • Support and assist other staff by modeling positive interpersonal skills; participate as a team member for planning and reviewing daily activities and attending in-services
  • Provide District staff with information regarding the interpretation process and concerns of individuals who are D/HH for the purpose of creating a positive Deaf friendly climate
  • Collaborate with teachers and other school staff to prove the optimum educational opportunities and in keeping with IEP requirements
  • Able to assist, console, and manage students who may exhibit heightened emotions
  • Exhibit command and proper annunciation, spelling, syntax and use of the English language to assist and model proper language usage by students
  • Be, or become, knowledgeable and supportive of classroom management and student discipline procedures
  • Ability to promote understanding of Deaf Culture and hearing loss

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to work in an environment with frequent interruptions and changing tasks and priorities
  • Communicate with students, parents, and community members with respect and confidentiality and consistent with the direction and guidance of staff, administrators, and school/district policies and procedures
  • Able to follow written and verbal direction and take the initiative to seek clarity and take action when needed
  • Able to work collaboratively and effectively with staff, students, parents, volunteers, and community members
  • Must be willing to be trained in Restraint and Isolation techniques
  • Knowledge of educational interpreting and related vocabulary is desired
  • Skill throughout the sign language continuum
