Position Title: Assistant Teacher
Reports To: Director

Status: Non-Exempt
Summary: The position of the Assistant Teacher includes fostering an environment to promote the physical, mental, social, and academic well-being of children at Butterfly Bunch. Assistant Teachers will provide quality care in balance with social and intellectual experiences. With appropriate guidance, children will grow both psychologically and socially in the care of Lead Teachers and Assistant Teachers.
Hours: Typically 30-35 hours per week, between the hours of 7:00am and 6:00pm but may vary due to the needs of the center.
Travel: Local travel for seminars and training. Opportunity for 1 out of state conference per year if interested.
Essential Duties and Functions:
DAY TO DAY CARETAKING:
- Create a safe and welcoming environment for children in care
- Feed children healthy, approved food from a designated, parent-approved menu
- Change children’s diapers at least every 2 hours or more often as needed. Take potty-trained children to the restroom on an as-needed basis. Apply diaper cream as needed.
- Use the Kangarootime app to record all meals, toileting/diapering, and naps.
- Use the Kangarootime app to take at least 1 picture of each child for parent viewing.
- Comfort children who are struggling with any aspect of their self-regulation ability (feeling sad, angry, hurt, etc.)
- Report any injuries to the director immediately and provide care accordingly to your ability.
- Assist children in falling asleep- this may mean rubbing backs, rocking, etc.
- Provide individualized care for each child, but especially infants.
EDUCATION/BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT:
- Participate in trainings offered by CCEI, Red Cross, Oakland Schools, GSQ, etc to further your knowledge in the field
- Assist with the planning with the other teachers in the classroom with age-appropriate lesson plans using the Frog Street Curriculum for classroom in the areas of sensory, literacy, music & movement, outside planning and small groups
- Monitor that children’s art work is age appropriate, is process and not product and there are KDIs listed for all posted projects
- Help to create an environment that fosters learning through play by having activities available to children all day, every day. Determine what materials are needed for classroom success.
- Always have a sensory-play option available for children (water, rice, dirt, etc.)
- Use appropriate, positive behavior management techniques for children in care
- Refrain from negative discipline, yelling, or any type of corporal punishment.
- Collaborate with other teachers in the room to determine correct form of behavior management
- Provide direction to teacher assistants and support staff in all areas of program development.
REGULATIONS/COMPLIANCE:
- Follow procedures and guidelines for any regulation-based portion of the day (diapering, sunscreen, behavior management, etc)
- Maintain required training hours (on and off-site)
- Seek out additional training in areas of interest/need
- Maintain ratios at all times – this means you may not leave the classroom without another staff member stepping in
- Refrain from using your cell phone in the classrooms
- Participate in increasing our star quality in the Great Stars to Quality program
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The demands of this job require the candidate to sit, stand, walk, bend, jump, reach, and lift equipment and children up to 50 pounds. This position often requires the candidate to be outdoors, to drive, to crawl, stoop, balance, walk up and down stairs, and run.
Qualifications an Assistant Teacher must meet or be willing to meet:
Be prepared to provide records of any of the following upon request.
- A CDA, Associates or Bachelors in ECE or related field - preferred but not required
- Experience working in a child care or school setting - preferred but not required
- Annual child, infant & adult CPR training is required within 90 days of hire by daycare licensing law. Current certification cards must be submitted at the time of hire or enrollment in a class must be arranged. CPR & first aid certification must be kept up to date – training is offered through Butterfly Bunch
- A negative TB test is required at the time of hire by daycare licensing law
- Childcare Background Fingerprints are required at the time of hire by daycare licensing law. Fingerprints must be kept up to date.
- Certain skills and qualities are essential in order to provide the best possible care for the children. They will also consider general competence, professional appearance and information obtained by their reference check and verification process

- Parent Relations: Establishes effective parent communication regarding individual children and their development progress
- Child Relations: Fosters effective communication techniques with children to promote learning in a comfortable, nurturing and fun environment
- Initiative: Recognizes what needs to be done and does it without prompting
- Safety: Follows company safety rules and safe work practices. Follow regulations at all times. Behavior management techniques and daily operations demonstrate a high value for the safety and security of children.
- Attendance: Reports to work as scheduled and on time. Follows advance notice guidelines for unscheduled absences and time off requests
- Communication Skills & Teamwork: Exhibits a “CAN DO” approach to work. Accepts and responds to supervision in a positive manner. Gains the cooperation of others to accomplish work objectives. Participates in a constructive, positive manner in team situations
