What is the role?

dotCMS is a cloud-based Digital Experience platform that is changing how enterprises do digital. We seek an individual who understands modern cloud software development and engineering and understands Content Management, Digital Asset Management, MarTech, and digital business spaces.

As the Director of Engineering, you will join our dynamic team and be responsible for leading the engineering team to develop and deliver high-quality software products on time. This includes leading with a vision for how to build a highly effective engineering organization, identifying and mitigating technical risks and issues, recruiting and managing engineering talent, continuously evaluating and improving engineering processes, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.

What is dotCMS?

Founded in 2009, dotCMS is the most agile, scalable, and secure content management system for enterprises. Built on leading Java technology, dotCMS is an open-source, hybrid-headless content management system that gives developers the flexibility of a headless CMS while equipping marketers with no-code visual content authoring. Whether you're building a network of global websites, an employee intranet, a customer portal, or single page web application, dotCMS helps you manage content, images, and assets in one centralized location and deliver them to any channel. Some of our notable customers include: Telus, Standard & Poors, Hospital Corporation of America, Royal Bank of Canada, Deutsche Bank, Comcast, Vodafone, Thomson Reuters, Dairy Queen, Lennox International, Chewy.com and O’Reilly Autoparts.

Who are we, really?

At “the dot,” you’ll find a diverse team of authentic individuals who share the goal of building the most agile, scalable and secure content management system, delighting customers and having a lot of fun doing it. We’re a curious, innovative, and collaborative group that works from anywhere, having been 100% remote long before a pandemic required it. Working remotely is in our DNA, whether it’s to enjoy the beautiful views of new countries or just more “you” time outside of work. And since we don’t gather around the water cooler in an office, we like to gather around the cool waters of Costa Rica a few times a year for our regular off-sites, where we blow off some steam and re-energize as a group.

What you’ll bring to the team:

  • You are a leader with a vision for how to build a highly effective engineering organization. You know what work to hand off and continuously motivate those beneath them in the required style.
  • You excel in the following 3 areas:
    • Process - what occurs when? You:
      • Can experiment with different development processes.
      • Shipped code with different development processes, have examples of things that failed but you’ll try again, have strong opinions but loosely held.
      • Reduce admin burden.
      • Are an unblocker: unblock all issues (not just engineering ones), identify and destroy time wasters, and have a history of high morale engineering organizations.
      • Focus on how to continue delivering value to the customer.
    • People - who are involved, and how are they motivated? You:
      • Attract candidates and create a talent pipeline.
      • Understand our people organization.
      • Have teams from previous experiences that follow you, have mentors/mentees outside the company, and are good at parting ways with low performers.
      • Make the team more valuable for having worked there.
      • Get the energy from having others succeed.
      • Take all the blame/none of the credit available during a crisis, and focus on giving people the best opportunity of their lives.
    • Technology - what will we use to get there? You:
      • Aren’t afraid to ask tough or deep questions.
      • Know when conditions change to make technological changes.
      • Trust the team but can play a tiebreaker.
      • Avoid making or delegating a decision in a disagreement.

Responsibilities:

  • Continue to implement a metrics-driven Agile Scrum and CI/CD
  • Improve our engineering infrastructure and institute modern software engineering tools and practices.
  • Articulate clear measures of success that correspond to business goals, communicate progress across the organization, and ensure an ongoing understanding of the impact.
  • Execution of product goals and product strategy.
  • Serve as a natural coach and mentor, passionate about leading a highly motivated product management team to develop new, bold software solutions and service offerings.
  • Attract and develop talent to be best-in-class at their work, with shared expectations across the entire team.
  • Optimize the engineering department's organizational structure.
  • Develop operational policies to meet performance/scale, security, continuous integration, and delivery goals.

Why we get excited about you:

  • 7+ years of experience building large-scale software applications, preferably in a B2B / Enterprise SaaS context.
  • 5+ years of experience in a leadership role, developing enterprise-class products.
  • Deep understanding of modern cloud development, monolithic and services-based architectures, CI/CD, monitoring, and testing.
  • Practical experience implementing CI/CD from start to finish; didn’t just observe its implementation in an organization.
  • Experience building a high-velocity, metrics-driven engineering organization that is closely aligned with business goals.
  • Experience scaling engineering at private equity or venture capital-backed software businesses.
  • Strong aptitude for data-informed decision-making
  • Experience working closely with software engineering teams to build a product.
  • Experience working with remote teams.
  • Bachelor degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering.

Why should you join?

If you have great experience, but are tired of being a cog in a giant corporate wheel, this job is for you. It’s a chance to create new SaaS offerings at an established, growing company with a mature product in use by major global organizations. Everything you do, every day, will make a huge impact on our company. Your work will be seen, felt and recognized and your past experience valued.
