Basic Function: Under the direction of the Practice Manager, the Lab Technician provides quality laboratory services.
Essential Functions:.
1. Provides Laboratory services.
2. Prepares blood and other laboratory specimens.
3. Prepares specimens for contracted reference laboratories.
4. Prepares requisition, including billing information and prepares shipment to the reference lab. Coordinates requests with reference lab(s). Inputs appropriate information into all necessary computer systems.
5. Reconciles lab reports with requisitions. Notifies provider immediately of any critical lab values as needed.
6. Maintains current knowledge and skills regarding laboratory procedures including.
1. Knowledge of tests requested by provider.
2. Manner necessary to prepare patient for testing and procuring samples for lab.
3. Time required for test completion and results to be available.
4. Analyze the correct type of test for results needed by provider.
5. Conducts and documents annual training of Clinical Support Staff to perform all in-house lab procedures.
6. Reports communicable diseases in accordance with Arizona and Nevada State Health Department laws.
7. Maintains CLIA certification status by:
a. Conducting quality controls on all in-house procedures
b. Tracks quality assurance issues.
c. Assists Medical Director to assure standards are met and in compliance with CLIA regulations.
8. Disposes of medical biohazard waste container weekly, according to policy.
9. Keeps work area clean and disinfected with emphasis on zero cross-contamination. Keeps equipment clean and operational.
10. Inventories lab supplies, orders as needed, and rotates according to expiration dates.
11. Assists Clinical Support staff with 12 lead EKG and spirometry testing. Assists clinical support staff with patient screening, vital signs, chief complaint and able to perform other duties as described. If Medical Assistant trained in administering medications and injections may administer under direct supervision of a provider as per medication protocol.
12. Follows all Quality Assurance Processes and Policies and Procedures.
13. Complies with CHC Standards of Conduct, Code of Conduct and Corporate Compliance.
Secondary Functions:
1. Understands role in Disaster Plan and that safety is a condition of employment.
2. Ensures established Quality Improvement and PCMH activities are performed according to policy. Participates in Quality Improvement activities as directed.
3. Uses PPE as appropriate.
4. Follows CHC’s Policies and Procedures, patient protocols and appropriate infection control procedures.
5. Attends meetings, seminars, and conferences as appropriate to ensure skills and knowledge remains current.
6. Serves on various CHC and community committees as required/requested.
7. Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Ability to perform each essential function duty satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
2. Graduation from an accredited medical assistant and/or laboratory technician program.
3. Ability to work with physicians, mid-level providers, clinical support staff, administrative staff and front office staff.
4. Ability to work under stress.
5. Maintain a current CPR certification.
6. Knowledge of venipuncture, EKG and spirometry and inventory procedures.
7. Attend training and educational sessions as required.
8. Possess a valid drivers’ license.
9. Good interpersonal and human relations skills are required. Must possess skills to empathize and care for a variety of patients, including low-income and diverse cultures and treat everyone (internal and external customers) with respect and dignity.
10. Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times in all situations and follow the laws and intent of the most current HIPAA laws and regulations and Canyonlands’ security and privacy policies.
11.Must be flexible and be willing to work overtime (including weekends and evenings) if required/requested.
Preferred Qualifications:
- National Medical Lab Technician certification preferred.
- One (1) year clinic and/or hospital lab experience.
- Experience working in E.H.R. system.
- Bi-lingual (English/Spanish/Navajo) language skills.
- Knowledge of Microsoft programs with the ability to effectively communicate using Outlook.
