Nursing Staff (PCHA)

This is a part-time (0.25 fte = 10 hrs/week) position.

The Lactation Consultant - Registered Nurse is responsible for providing safe, family-centered patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans for the breastfeeding/chest-feeding dyad, as well as for the pumping parent, and is fully collaborative with the patient, patient's family, significant others, and members of the health care team. The Lactation Consultant - Registered Nurse demonstrates specialized knowledge and clinical expertise in breastfeeding/chest-feeding and human lactation. As an integral member of the Health Care Team, the Lactation Consultant - Registered Nurse functions within the Scope of Practice as defined by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and follows Standards of Practice as defined by their professional association, International Lactation Consultant Association, and adheres to policies, procedures, and guidelines of care.

Essential Functions

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assesses patient lactation needs by obtaining medical histories, examining patients, and gathering information about the baby and family setting.
  • Analyzes and documents physical, psychological, and social factors in developing an individualized plan of care. Communicates the plan of care and all pertinent information to other members of the health care team to provide coordinated patient treatment. Keeps accurate medical records and updates nursing care whenever conditions, needs, or goals of the patient change.
  • Teaches lactation instruction to other health care professionals and monitors the proper performance of their training to patients. Conducts group lactation instruction for outpatients.
  • Participates in and provides educational programs for the general public, using health care professionals and community organizations.
  • Communicates activities and problems with Practice Manager.
  • Participates in fire, safety, and disaster educational programs and activities.
  • Cooperates with continuity of care coordinators regarding risk management, quality management, utilization management, and infection control issues.
  • Understands and adheres to Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) Pro
  • Provides support to Advice Nurse pool for General Pediatric patient advice calls.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Degree in Nursing from an accredited College or University required.

Experience:

  • At least three years of clinical experience in maternal/child nursing required.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Current CA Registered Nurse (RN) required.
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required.
  • Current Certification with the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE), or currently enrolled in a certification training program required.
  • Affiliation with professional nursing and lactation organizations highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of inventory management practices
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to document patient care as dictated by a physician in a legible and clear manner, following all local, state, and federal guidelines for documentation
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy in accordance with governing HIPAA regulations
  • Ability to educate patients and/or families as to the nature of disease and to provide instruction on proper care and treatment according to physician protocols, guidelines, or instructions
  • Ability to perform standard clinical procedures according to established protocols
  • Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and interpret policies accurately
  • Ability to deal with diverse patient/family interactions and demonstrate customer service skills in interactions with all patients, families, and staff, including high volume and stressful situations
  • Ability to solve problems and identify solutions
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, work independently and meet deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and handle a high volume of interactions (phones, patients, etc.)
  • Ability to field phone calls and answer questions
  • Ability to adjust communications to fit the needs and level of understanding of the receiver
  • Ability to exercise calmness in stressful situations
  • Ability to maintain and coordinate multiple forms and paper documentation related to patient care
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and display data in appropriate format and keep accurate records
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

The work involves considerable physical exertion such as frequent lifting of patients and equipment, bending and stooping, and walking. The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, where conditions cannot be controlled. Work is performed in an office setting which is adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated. Outpatient clinical setting with ability to travel between work locations as needed.

Risk of Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens

Tasks involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues. The potential for spills or splashes of blood, body fluids, tissues exist in job related tasks.

Pay Range

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role.

Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.

Minimum to Midpoint Range (1.0 FTE): $111,197 too $138,986
