GENERAL DEFINITION

The Mechanic repairs and maintains diesel engines, and mechanical and hydraulic components.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Apply mechanical knowledge to power generation applications.
  • Perform diesel engine repairs (Locomotive Engines).
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, tear down, examine, rebuild and/or replace defective components.
  • Inspects defective equipment and diagnoses malfunctions, using test instruments, such as motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges.
  • Inspects and verifies dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications.
  • Inspects, repairs, and maintains automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery, such as pumps and compressors.
  • Disassembles and overhauls internal combustion engines, pumps, generators, transmissions, clutches, and rear ends.
  • Reconditions and replaces parts, pistons, bearings, gears, and valves.
  • Reads job orders and observes and listens to operating equipment to ensure conformance to specifications or to determine malfunctions.
  • Attaches test instruments to equipment and reads dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions.
  • Adjusts brakes, aligns wheels, tightens bolts and screws, and reassembles equipment.
  • Changes oil, checks batteries, repairs tires and tubes, and lubricates equipment and machinery.
  • Operates valve-grinding machine to grind and reset valves.
  • Examines and adjusts protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.
  • Operates safely and applies safety practice at work while performing duties.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS

  • Minimum 2 years of automotive or diesel experience. (Preferred)
  • Provide personal basic tools to perform job tasks.
  • High school diploma or equivalent. (Preferred)
  • Vocational or Technical certification. (Preferred)
  • Able to maintain regular, full attendance is a requirement.
  • Able to work overtime during the week and weekend is a requirement.
  • Able to grow in the position with a positive and willing attitude.
  • Able to remember and understand instructions, guidelines, and additional essential information is required.
  • Able to safely perform the essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat to the safety of self or others.
  • Able to legally work in the United States.
  • Able to pass a physical, drug and background check.

  • Able to work in a mechanical/industrial shop or field environment (being aware of your surroundings and operations going on around you).
  • Able to climb on overhead structures, to work beneath machines and in close quarters performing analysis and repair work.
  • Able to work long hours performing essential duties.
  • Able to see and hear, with or without correction.
  • Able to respond to visual and audible instructions.
  • Able to regularly lift, push, pull up to 50 lbs. unassisted and regularly.
  • Able to occasionally lift, push, pull 50 lbs. assisted and regularly.
  • Able to read, write and understand basic English.
  • Able to withstand exposure to dust, grease/oil, noise, seasonal weather elements.
  • Able to work in hazardous work environment around cranes, forklifts, moving equipment.
