Position: Registered Nurse Position - Bilingual English/Spanish Required
Reports to: Director of Student Support Services
Classification: Without ESA Certificate: Classified Non Union, Non Exempt under FLSA
With ESA Certificate : WEA Union Member, Exempt under FLSA

Terms of Employment:
7.5 hours per day; 194 day annual contract includes 180 day school schedule plus 4 days before school year and 10 paid holidays. It is an expectation that the nurse will be available for additional summer work as offered by the Student Support Services Director, depending on summer school or summer program needs.
Salary Range : Dependent upon classification: Contract will be prorated according to start date
Classified Non-Union: As per the Classified Non-Represented Salary Schedule, $34.36-$48.11 per hour.
Certified as per the WEA salary schedule beginning at $54,757 per year.
Benefits: Eligible for employer contribution toward Medical/Dental Vision Benefits; Washington State Retirement System; Sick leave, personal leave, paid holidays.

Job description:
Provide nursing care as assigned by supervisor or nursing/health coordinator to meet the needs of all individual students. Provide appropriate, one-on-one support nursing services to address the combined health, social, and attendance needs of migrant eligible students to improve student health and academic engagement.

Responsibilities
  • Assess the physical and emotional health of students as related to the education process and within the scope of school nurse practice; initiate referrals for further diagnosis and treatment of identified health needs and provides follow-up; communicates health concerns that may impact learning to appropriate staff with parent and/or student consent for the purpose of supporting student health and academic achievement.
  • Provide parent workshops and attend migrant family events, including back to school events, family nights, that pertain to health topics (i.e. mental health, childhood obesity, worker safety, community resources, hygiene, dental, vaccines, etc.).
  • Coordinate with community resources as appropriate for student care- including fulfilling the requirements for the migrant physical exams, immunizations, sports physicals, etc. to support engagement in academic activities.
  • Identify student and family health needs (physical, social-emotional-behavioral and other) and prioritize students and develop a caseload of 20 – 30 students.
  • Collaborate with district administrators, teachers and school staff, including 504 planners, school nurses, health services staff and counselors, to identify migrant students in need of service- including migrant students with high absenteeism and chronic tardiness.
  • Document Migrant data related to student assessment and interventions in case log.
  • Professional Development as required for job responsibilities and to stay current in the field.
  • Assist in the review of health history questionnaires, as recorded by parents, to determine students that may encounter health risks at school
  • Assist in the timely development of student Emergency Care Plans for those students who have been identified by parents who may encounter health risks at school.
  • May assist to oversee medication procedures for students taking medications at school including but not limited: storage of medications, dispensing, and removal or discarding of medications.May assist with state mandated student screenings.
  • Maintain accurate student medical related records.
  • Coordinate and review student immunization records for compliance with state laws.
  • Respond to district health/medical emergency calls for students and/or staff illnesses and injuries;assess medical situation, use critical analysis in order to make a clinical decision to assure the safety of the student.
  • Respond to health room calls as necessary.
  • Provide necessary care for students with diabetes, asthma, and other health problems.
  • Provide health services allowed by licensure to meet the needs of students.
  • May assist with the coordination and provision of medically related training for staff including but not limited to HIV/Aides, Bloodborne Pathogens, First Aide, CPR.
  • Provide consultation on an emergency basis.
  • Screen students as needed to ascertain presence of communicable disease, isolate as appropriate, involving Public Health Department when and as required by law.
  • Other student and staff health and safety related duties/functions as needed.

Expectations:
It is an expectation that the nurse will be available for additional summer work as offered by the Student Support Services Director, depending on summer school or summer program needs.

Qualifications
  • Valid Washington State Registered Nurse License required, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN) preferred.
  • Washington State Educational Staff Associate School Nurse Certificate or willing to complete.
  • Able to provide own transportation.
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English required.
  • Punctual and consistent attendance.
  • School Nursing and/or Clinical experience/training preferred.
  • A fingerprint background check is required for all prospective employees prior to start date.
  • Expected to attend work as scheduled and model appropriate professional behavior.
Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Ability and willingness to continue training and education to learn the most current innovations and application for nursing services.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with large numbers of staff in promoting the migrant health services program.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop rapport with students and parents.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop rapport and work with colleagues, such as the other school district nurses and community health and social services organizations.
  • Be able to work flexible hours and make home visits to migrant families as needed.
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding setting.
  • Ability to solve practical problems, apply appropriate judgment and deal with a variety of situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and expertise related to child/youth development and growth.
  • Knowledge of health care and nursing techniques and principles, including pharmacology.
  • Willingness to receive training and obtain Educational Staff Assistant Certificate.
  • Certified First Aid/CPR trainer helpful or willingness to obtain a certificate.
  • Experience and desire to work with children.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse students and parents desirable.
  • Education, experience, and/or training in public health or related field desirable.
